The Horticultural Society ran the Flower Show every August Bank Holiday.

In June 1917 the Society purchased two potato spraying machines. These they used for allotment holders as well as others. It was hoped that by spraying them it would prevent disease and increase production. Not many were able to be sprayed as they were considered too fully grown.
